IONIA, Mich. (AP) - An Ionia hunter took down a 6-point buck last month using a Remington 16-gauge, three-shot automatic shotgun.
Sounds pretty normal, right?
Well, consider the shooter, Bernard Baxter, is 85 years old. And he had just bagged the 55th deer of his hunting career.
Baxter has recorded a journal entry for every hunting expedition since his very first time in 1943. It includes who he hunted with, the weather conditions of the day, whether he used a bow or shotgun, the weight of the deer and more.
In addition to the 68-year-old journal, Baxter continues to use the same red wool hunting suit he bought in 1943. He uses a knife of the same age to clean the deer.
Baxter tells the Sentinel-Standard he simply enjoys "being out there."
