Special Michigan reindeer plate just for Santa

Jolly old St. Nick isn't required to have a license plate on his sleigh as he flies across the skies of Michigan.  But if he wants a personal one, it's waiting for him at the Michigan Secretary of State's Office.

Secretary of State Ruth Johnson has announced "BLVINME" as the winning entry in the "A Plate for Santa" contest. It was chosen out of more than 500 personalized plate ideas submitted by residents.

"Narrowing all of the creative suggestions down to one was difficult, but nothing compared to the impossible mission Santa has each year in delivering gifts around the world," Johnson said. "Somehow, because so many people believe he can do it, he does."

Reached for comment earlier this month, Claus had said he would like a personalized plate for Christmas (see video at http://www.youtube.com/michsosoffice).

Other finalists in the competition included:

Lorie Darling, of Eaton Rapids, submitted the winning entry via Facebook and will receive a commemorative license plate plaque in recognition. The winning configuration, which had to be seven characters or less, was determined after multiple rounds of voting by Secretary of State staff.

"Santa has always been a big deal for our family," said Darling, who has 13- and 5-year-old daughters. "We take a picture with him every year and use it in our greeting cards. He is a very real part of Christmas for us. You are never too old to believe."

Johnson believes the contest has been successful in its objectives of generating holiday cheer and promoting www.ExpressSOS.com, the gateway to many online Secretary of State services, including Plate it Your Way, a tool for personalizing license plates. More than 400,000 timesaving transactions have been recorded on ExpressSOS since it was launched on Sept. 22.
