FENTON, Mich. (AP) - An orthopedic surgeon from Fenton is back home following his fourth overseas military deployment.
Dr. Sidney Martin returned last month from Kandahar, Afghanistan, where he served as a commander of the 127th Medical Group with the Air National Guard. He was responsible for evaluating the medical condition of U.S. Air Force flight crews.
Martin tells The Flint Journal he "always felt that serving" his "country in this way was the thing" he would do.
The 54-year-old first was deployed in 1991 to England during Desert Storm. In 2002, he was deployed to Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom, where he flew in combat missions as a flight surgeon.
His third deployment sent him to Balad, the medical hub in Iraq, where he tended to injured soldiers in 2007.
