Michigan funeral director charged in fraud case

NEW BALTIMORE, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a Michigan funeral director collected money for prepaid funerals but didn't put the money into escrow accounts as required by law.

The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens reports 57-year-old John Olszewski was arraigned Dec. 28 on funeral contract fraud in 42-2 District Court in New Baltimore. He owns Duncan-Olszewski Funeral Home in New Haven, about 30 miles northeast of Detroit.

Authorities say Olszewski failed to escrow funds for prepaid funerals and sold prepaid funeral contracts without a valid license. He was due in court Thursday for a hearing in the case. Authorities say at least four people have come forward with complaints.

An email seeking comment was sent Thursday morning by The Associated Press to Olszewski's defense lawyer James Hogan.
