DETROIT (AP) - Relatives have identified a painter who fell from the Ambassador Bridge into the near-freezing Detroit River as a 27-year-old Garden City man.
Kent Morton was part of a crew doing paint and welding work on the center span of the bridge when he fell about 1:45 p.m. Wednesday. A scaffold dangled beneath the bridge after the fall.
U.S. Coast Guard Sector Detroit Chief Gabriel Settel said a boat and helicopter were searching a section of the river between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, in Canada. A dive team was called in to assist.
Settel said painting and welding work was being done on the bridge at the time of the fall. The commuter bridge is owned by the Detroit International Bridge Co. and connects Detroit with Windsor.
