Teacher suspended after improper gift exchange

MATTAWAN, Mich. (AP) - A teacher in southwestern Michigan was suspended for five days after students brought inappropriate items to school for a Christmas gift exchange.

Mattawan Superintendent Patrick Bird says the teacher was suspended because she didn't take immediate action after the wrappings were removed. WOOD-TV says Bird describes the gifts as adult-themed items.

TV station WWMT didn't identify the teacher Friday but says she's back on the job at Mattawan High School. The superintendent says she's a "great teacher" who's made a "positive difference for kids over the years."

The students were not disciplined.

Mattawan is in Van Buren County, 15 miles southwest of Kalamazoo.
