SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

Saginaw Township Police Officer Scott Malace has been off work since Sept. 21 fighting some health problems that so far have not been diagnosed.

He just got back from the Mayo Clinic two weeks ago without a positive diagnosis, in fact, the tests they ran for devastating diseases all came back negative.

Trips to hospitals for tests can be expensive when family members travel with you, so the Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 251 decided to help out with a $1,000 donation to help with expenses.

"We heard about Scott, it's a project very worth while to try and help him and his family out, so we're glad to have done this," says Robert Simon from the Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 251.

"When we collect all this money in this area, we'd like to give some back to this area. His wife has to pay her own way when she takes him to the hospital, so this will help them," Korean War Veteran Lydia Davis told WNEM.

The community has really come together to help with benefits and today's donation. The family wants to give the community a big thank you.

"Words can't express how appreciative we are, we're just overwhelmed at the way they've been here for us, people we don't even know. We feel very blessed, all the love that's surrounded us. From the emails, text messages, phone calls, cards, the list goes on," said Scott's wife Heather.

The next trip to the Mayo Clinic is scheduled for the middle of February, where they're hopeful he'll get a clean bill of health and be able to return to the job he loves.
