HURON COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -
Authorities in Huron County say someone broke into a Bad Axe business and stole thousands of dollars worth of bath salts.
It happened Monday just before midnight at the Maple Lane Discount Store on N. Van Dyke Road in Verona Township.
Huron County Sheriff Kelly J. Hanson said the thief stole a display cabinet that contained approximately $1,000 of a combination of herbal incense and bath salts.
Police recovered the cabinet in a wooded area near the store with the contents removed. Hanson said people abusing bath salts to get high are a growing trend.
"Examples of how it is being used are either by inhaling though sniffing or basically smoking it in some type of form," Hanson said in a news release. "The effects have been reported to be similar to crack cocaine and is addicting."
Laws were passed last year dealing with bath salts, but it appears loopholes are currently hindering what's legal or what's not, Hanson said.
