Port Huron native produced Oscar-nominated doc

PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) - A man who grew up in Port Huron just earned a new title.

Oscar-nominated film producer.

"If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front" is a film produced by Steve Bannatyne's company.

It's in the running for best documentary feature at the Academy Awards. It was 1 of 5 films nominated in the category last week.

The 41-year-old now lives in California. Bannatyne says he was in his pajamas sipping coffee and watching the nominations on television. The announcements ended before his category, but a quick search online popped up the full results.

Bannatyne tells the Times Herald his wife and daughter were asleep when he found out, and he didn't want to wake them. But "then the phones went nuts."
