Flint schools start text alert service for parents

FLINT, Mich. (AP) - The Flint School District says it will start using text messages to alert parents about closings and other urgent news.

District spokesman Bob Campbell says texts mostly will alert parents about closings, emergencies, reminders and other developments that are of immediate concern.

He tells The Flint Journal that the district is "going to be judicious in how" it uses the texts.

The district says the service is going live Sunday night.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Parents who want to receive text messages from the Flint district should send a text message that says "Flintschool" to the number 288411, then wait for a confirmation message.
