BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -
There could be a solution on the horizon to beef shortages, and it's coming from the science lab.
Reports say the first-ever culture-dish hamburger will be served to a celebrity taster later this year. It's being developed in the Netherlands. One customer we talked with at Larry's Meat Market in Bay City doesn't want anything to do with such a product.
"I think our meats already have enough chemicals and stuff as it is and that's pushing it, I think that's going overboard," said Jeff Johnston, of Bay City.
Larry Norris has owned Larry's Meat Market for 37 years. He was surprised when we told him about lab-grown beef. WNEM asked him if he thought he'd ever hear of such a thing as lab-produced meat when he first opened the shop. "Not really, no, but I can see it possibly coming down the road, but I don't know if this generation would be susceptible to it," said Norris.
Norris added he's intrigued at the possibility of working with lab-produced meat.
