MIDLAND, MI (WNEM) -
Gary Lewis is one of many people hoping to learn more about an electronic free tax preparation service in Michigan.
"I want to use it for my personal use and advise other people that it's available for their use," says Lewis.
Congressman Dave Camp participated in a briefing today at the Midland Community Center and urged eligible Michigan families to look into Free File.
It's a partnership between the government and private tax software companies, designed to help people in Michigan file their taxes, electronically and for free.
"We think that about 70 percent of filers are eligible for this program so it's an opportunity to get their taxes done, get them done accurately and get their return as quickly as possible," says Congressman Camp.
You have to meet certain income requirements to use Free File, but people can use it to file both their federal and state taxes. You just have to visit the IRS website or the Michigan Department of Treasury website.
"Michigan's a leader on this. We're one of 22 states that has this kind of partnership," says Congressman Camp.
Congressman Camp hopes the awareness about Free File spreads so more people can take part.
"Allows people in a simple way to file a complicated return in many cases and get their return more quickly," says Congressman Camp.
