Michael Crane in court on Aug. 16, 2013 (Source: CBS 5 News)
PHOENIX (CBS5) -
The family of a Paradise Valley couple killed during a home invasion last year is asking the court for their stolen jewelry back.
During a hearing Friday morning in Phoenix, the defense said the family can't have the jewelry back until it is tested for evidence.
Michael Crane, 31, is facing several charges, including first-degree murder and arson, for the deaths of Valley philanthropists Lawrence and Glenna Shapiro on Jan. 30. Police said the couple was shot and their bodies burned during a home invasion.
Crane was also in court Friday and again insisted the courts have no jurisdiction over him.
During a previous court appearance, Crane told the court commissioner he was bothered by how his name appeared on court documents. He was then instructed to keep quiet and only answer the questions posed to him. The commissioner entered the not guilty plea on behalf of Crane.
Crane is also facing murder charges for the death of cigar shop owner Bruce Gaudet.
Gaudet was found dead a few days earlier just a few miles away.
Along with Crane, six others have also been charged in connection with the murder.
They face charges including theft, trafficking in stolen property and hindering prosecution in connection with both cases.
