Michigan union proposal fights ‘right-to-work'

Posted: Updated:

A labor union coalition has started a broad campaign that would include pre-empting a possible "right-to-work" push by Michigan lawmakers.

The proposed constitutional amendment announced Tuesday is broader than a stance against measures that might seek to ban contracts requiring employees to join unions. The union-backed amendment appears to provide protection for collective bargaining rights against a wide range of possible legislation.

The kickoff comes after United Auto Workers President Bob King last week said a union coalition had agreed to mount a petition drive aimed at placing a right-to-work ban before Michigan voters in November.

Right to work legislation has some supporters among Republicans who control the Legislature, but passage is questionable. Republican Gov. Rick Snyder has said he doesn't want the legislation sent to his desk.
