Lapeer County resident Bill Boots couldn't believe what he was seeing.
"I just saw the clouds forming and debris flying everywhere and I said, 'Yeah, let's get to the basement now,' " Boots said.
The twister was causing damage in northeastern Lapeer County and his house was in the four and half mile long path of the E F2 twister. The family sought shelter and hoped to avoid the storm. But the cyclone, packing 125 mile per hour winds, had other plans.
"I looked up and the house literally starts lifting off and I look up and I see sky," Boots said.
Now, Bill along with his wife and son were exposed to the raging winds. They hid under a couch against a wall and held on for dear life.
"I had that couch just gripped and I had my wife in the other hand just holding on tight. And we just prayed that everything would be all right," Boots said.
They made it through those terrifying moments without a scratch. But their Oregon township home was a different story.
"We just couldn't believe the devastation," Boots said.
"Bill might've lost his home in the storm but he didn't lose his sense of humor.
"I just hope I don't get in trouble for polluting you know?" Boots said.
Bill obviously has an excuse for the big mess that stretches for several miles.
"A guy said he saw part of my house on the other side of Stanley Road bridge. I've got my clothes and my wife's clothes are across the river by hundreds of yards," Boots said.
Even though the twister is making his life harder, he's thankful for good friends and more days on this earth.
"Everybody's alive. Nobody was hurt. I don't think that anybody could ask for anything more," Boots said.
For now, Bill will live in a Winnebago as he and the rest of his neighbors put the pieces back together.
