The Michigan State Police Bay City Post said a traffic stop in Saginaw turned deadly after a 24-year-old Saginaw man shot a trooper early Friday morning.

At about 2:15 a.m. state troopers conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle on Fulton Street, west of Walcott Street, on the city's east side.

During the traffic stop, Keontae Z. Amerson fired several shots at the troopers, striking one of them twice, said state police Detective 1st Lt. Stephen Sipes.

Sipes said troopers returned fire, fatally wounding Amerson.

Sources say the injured trooper, an 11-year veteran of the force, was shot in the neck and arm. He was last listed in stable condition at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw.

The other trooper, a 7-year veteran, was not injured.

What led to the stop wasn't immediately known.

Sipes said the troopers pulled the vehicle over and spoke with the driver, a 21-year-old Saginaw female, before returning to their patrol car.

When the troopers arrived back at the suspect's vehicle, Amerson exited the car and an altercation ensued. That's when Amerson reportedly pulled out a handgun and fired off several shots.

Officials say there were no arrest warrants issued for Amerson. But Department of Corrections records show Amerson has had previous run-ins with the law. He pleaded guilty in 2006 to carrying a concealed weapon and pleaded guilty in 2007 to fourth-degree fleeing from a police officer.

The female driver was questioned by police after the shooting and released.

Both troopers are on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
