Some Michigan teachers could get $1,600 bonuses

ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) - Some Michigan teachers could get $1,600 bonuses for their work aimed at raising student test scores, volunteering to tutor kids or developing training sessions for staff.

The Detroit Free Press reports Friday that the incentives are part of a broad approach to improve teaching. It's a key focus of the federal School Improvement Grant program that has invested in the nation's lowest-performing schools since 2009, including $83 million for 28 Michigan schools in 2010.

The Buena Vista School District, the Mt. Morris Consolidated Schools and the Saginaw School Distrcit were among those awarded the federal SIG funds.

Nineteen of the schools were required to develop a teacher evaluation system that uses student growth data in a significant way.

Romulus Middle School in suburban Detroit is also among those involved. District Superintendent Carl Weiss says he's hopeful the incentives will have some impact.
