Runaway babysitter caught taking family car for joyride

HURON COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A 14-year-old who was supposed to be babysitting four kids was busted by police behind the wheel of the family car.

The children, between the ages of 2 and 10, were left alone at their Bad Axe home while the babysitter drove all the way to Caseville.

A Huron County Sheriff deputy's cruiser dash-cam video shows the girl driving the family car when she was supposed to be babysitting.

"The keys were not in it, she apparently located the keys and decided to take a ride," said Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson.

Other friends were in the car with her. The deputy pulled the teen over because the car's tail lights were out and the registration on the car was expired.

The deputy questioned the runaway babysitter for a while and decided the story didn't add up.

"She wasn't very truthful with him at all," Hanson said. "She lied about her age at the beginning and then reasons why she was in Caseville, and finally the truth came out."

TV5 tried to talk with the parents but they did not want to go on camera. The father told us they hired this babysitter before with no problems - this time they won't be hiring her again.

The prosecutor is reviewing this case. Police said they are trying to get a petition against the 14-year-old which means she will likely appear in juvenile court.
