SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -
A national business magazine is out with a new list and it further disparages Saginaw's already rough image.
Forbes claims that Saginaw is the most dangerous city in the country for women. But TV5 has found there may be a few problems with the list and how it was put together.
Forbes quotes FBI statistics that say there are 76 rapes for every 100,000 people in the Saginaw area.
But sometimes statistics don't tell the whole story, so TV5 went to Child and Family Services of Saginaw to see what they had to say about this article.
Adrianne Coker is the director of the Sexual Assault Center and says that they have three full-time therapists counseling victims of sexual assault.
Coker says that for the first four months of 2012, sex assaults are up compared to other years, so she wasn't exactly surprised to see the Forbes ranking. TV5 asked her what factors what might put Saginaw at the top of the list and Coker wondered if the economy might be a factor.
Some people are already calling out Forbes for their accuracy. If one looks at the article and the slideshow closely, it says Saginaw's metropolitan area has a population of almost 400,000 people, and that is just dead wrong. According to 2010 Census data, the city of Saginaw has just over 51,000 people and the entire county has only 200,000.
So does this mistake make this list invalid?
TV5 went to the FBI website where they have crime statistics listed in alphabetical order. The city underneath Saginaw on the list is Salem, OR, which has the population that Forbes gave to Saginaw.
So this may be more of a typo. TV5 double-checked Forbes' other numbers with the FBI statistics and those are all correct.
So until someone at Forbes reconfirms their information, yes, unfortunately, it appears Saginaw is the most dangerous city for women.
