TV5 tours suspected serial stabber's jail cell 8-26-2010

Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell said suspected serial stabber Elias Abuelazam will be booked and then taken to his cell on the fifth floor of the Genesee County Jail.

Pickell gave WNEM TV5 access to the restricted housing unit. The cell where 33-year-old- Abuelazam will be confined for 23 hours a day measures just 8 feet by 13 feet and it's removed from the general population.

Only 12 other inmates are housed in the special wing of the Genesee County Jail where the violent or troublesome inmates are housed. Abuelazam will be number 13.

As part of the rules, he's not allowed to communicate with other inmates or he will lose the privilege of leaving his cell for an hour per day. That hour is to see his attorney, go to the doctor, or simply walk around the main common area for some exercise.

A deputy will check in on Abuelazam every 15 minutes to make sure he doesn't try to harm himself or commit suicide. The isolation is also for his safety and protection so that other inmates don't try to hurt him.

Police believe Abuelazam attacked at least 18 men across three states, five of them fatally in Flint. And most of the victims have been African American males.

Sheriff Pickell likened the 33-year-old to the fictional horror character from "The Silence of the Lambs," Hannibal Lecter. "What's the difference between Hannibal, and this guy? They're both killers, mass killers," said Pickell.
