A county commissioner campaigning for a state representative job was going door to door trying to garner support when she was bitten by a dog.
Ann Doyle said she lived through a horrific ordeal Wednesday. Doyle, who is campaigning to be a state representative in the 94th District, was in Frankenmuth Township going door-to-door trying to garner support for her campaign. She made a stop at a house on Junction Road when she was confronted by a dog.
Doyle said only one thought went through her mind:
"Get out of there. Try to get back to the car. But there wasn't time," Doyle said.
Doyle was too far away from her car. She was in the front yard alone with an angry dog.
"At first I thought ok is he just gonna keep growling at me but within a few seconds he did the lunge the first lunge and so I knew I was in trouble," Doyle said.
The dog bit Doyle three times-twice in her right arm and once in the left arm.
"My arm was hurting really bad from the first bite," Doyle said.
After a couple of minutes help arrived. The dog's owner came out of the house yelling for the dog to stop. The dog stopped the attack and Doyle was taken away for medical attention. Doyle ended up with stitches in one arm after spending three hours in the hospital. Doyle says the owners of that dog have been a class act through the whole ordeal.
"The homeowner called me that evening to check on me and we had a really nice talk. We even talked about my campaign. So he was really nice and I really appreciate him calling. You couldn't ask for better cooperative people," Doyle said.
Doyle says the owner even put up one her signs in his yard. The dog is quarantined at the home for ten days. Meanwhile Doyle plans to be back on the campaign trail soon. And she's hoping all dog owners to one thing to make her life easier.
"Just make sure there's something that says there's an electric fence or there's a dog on the premise or something," Doyle said.
State Farm ranks Michigan 6th in the nation with 181 dog bite claims in the last year. The average cost per claim is 2nd highest in the country, at $38,000 dollars.
Illinois, by comparison had the 2nd most dog bite claims at 309. Ohio is 4th with 215, and Indiana is 8th on the list with 139 claims.
