FLINT, MI (WNEM) -
A Memorial Day service was held in McFarlan Park in Flint Monday morning, honoring fallen soldiers and adding a new name to the ring of soldiers who were lost in the line of duty to their country.
Sgt. Frank Kollar was honored at the ceremony. Kollar went missing while leading an eight-man patrol in 1944 during a campaign to take Bologna, Italy.
The honor was long overdue, something the family understands.
"I think there was so much grief at the time," said Kollar's nephew, Jerry Draper. "The family was just so devastated and they weren't interested in any of this, so the grandchildren and nephews and so on take it up and do the job."
Some veterans at the ceremony feel it's their responsibility to make sure we never forget our fallen warriors.
"For the people that did not serve, it's my job to enlighten you," said Vietnam Veteran William Eplett."When Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, Flag Day roll around you have that little thought up in your head.".
