Report: Red Wings Nick Lidstrom to hang up skates

DETROIT, MI (WNEM) -

Reports are surfacing in the sports world that Red Wings captain Nick Lidstrom will announce his retirement on Thursday.

Canadian news agency TSN said the Red Wings have scheduled a news conference, where the 42-year-old will announce his retirement. The Associated Press reports that Lidstrom will talk about whether he's retiring or returning to play a 21st season.

Lidstrom took over as captain in 2006 when Steve Yzerman hung up his skates.

The four-time Stanley Cup champion and seven-time Norris Trophy winner put retirement on hold in each of the previous two years by signing one-year contracts and answering questions from reporters on a conference call. This time, he's holding a news conference at Joe Louis Arena.

Lidstrom spent his entire career with the Detroit hockey team. WNEM.com will keep you posted as to what Lidstrom does tomorrow during the press conference.

Lidstrom had 34 points and a plus-21 rating that ranked among the league leaders last season. He missed a career-high 11 games due to a bone bruise on his right ankle.
