LANSING, MI (WNEM) -
Michigan government officials ask the public to join in the battle against aquatic invasive species. Gov. Rick Snyder has proclaimed June 9-17, 2012, as Aquatic Invasive Species Awareness Week in an effort to stop new introductions and control the spread of aquatic invasive species.
Just last week, state officials announced 12 felony charges against an Arkansas man found selling live Asian carp from tanks in parking lots around the state, including Midland. It is alleged David Shane Costner, 42, of Harrisburg, AR, possessed 110 grass carp. On May 16, Costner allegedly sold two of the live grass carp to undercover DNR investigators.
The case is a stark reminder that everyone enjoying Michigan's waters has a role in keeping Michigan free of invasive species. A few simple preventative measures will go a long way to curb the spread of unwanted species. For example, anglers should inspect their bait and dispose of unused bait in the trash to prevent the unintended introduction of species like Asian carp.
After a day of fun on the water, all watercraft and recreational equipment should be inspected before leaving the boat launch area, any vegetation or mud should be removed, and all live wells or areas that may contain water cleaned and drained.
A number of new invasive species are at our doorstep including two species of Asian carp and several harmful aquatic plants. The Great Lakes and Michigan's inland waters draw millions of recreational users and tourists and are already dealing with more than 180 nonnative aquatic species found in the region. Preventing the introduction of new species is a responsibility that falls on everyone that uses the resource.
AIS week is sponsored by the DEQ's Water Resources Division with collaborative efforts from other state and federal agencies as well as private and nonprofit organizations.
