Kenneth Bryan Coty
WEXFORD COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -
Dive teams have located the body of a local man who drowned Friday while trying to save his son.
Police identified the victim as 41-year-old Kenneth Bryan Coty of Merrill.
Coty was attempting to rescue his 2-year-old son, who had fallen overboard while on a family fishing trip at Lake Mitchell in Wexford County.
With the help of his other two children, Coty was able to get the 2-year-old back on the boat safely. The child was wearing a life jacket.
His body was recovered Wednesday morning at about 8:30 a.m.
The lake straddles the Cherry Grove-Selma Township line, just west of Cadillac and about 35 miles southeast of Traverse City.
It was reported by 9 & 10 News that Coty was wearing steel-toe boots during the rescue and wasn't able to reach a life jacket that was thrown to him because of strong winds.
A family member tells WNEM TV5 that Coty was a wonderful husband and a father of six.
