Saving Our Streets: Volunteers endeavor to help kids feel secure

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

The Boy's & Girl's Club of Greater Flint is a great place for kids to hang out and Wednesday the club had a few older kids in the building.

Employee's from the local Target stores spent some of their day volunteering at the club too.

After a quick tour of the facility, the volunteers went to work manning bounce houses, swing sets, a dodge ball game and something that's very simple.

"A lot of times kids just want somebody to listen to them talk," said Bob Nelson, Director of Operations, Boy's & Girl's Club of Greater Flint, "I don't know if there's a big secret, but a lot of times kids just want people to spend time with them."

That's something these volunteers have no problem doing, because they realize children are the future.

"One child at a time, one day at a time," said Joseph Shelby, of Target Corporation. "If we can just reach that child and say, 'feel comfortable here.' Seeing something different gives them the thought process to say, 'I can do that, I can move forward.'"

The kids had a great time playing and learning and they're not the only ones.

"When we walk out of here today, we are confident that not only did we learn a lot, but we were given a lot from the kids," said Shelby. "We know they can come back every single day and get this experience over and over again."
