Prayer vigil held for 12-year-old murder victim

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A large group of people gathered at a Saginaw house where a 12-year-old boy was shot and killed. They held a prayer vigil to remember Tamaris Steward.

Steward was spending the night at his grandfather's house when a shooter fired 15 bullets inside. He died Thursday, June 7, the day after his last day of school.

The group Parishioners on Patrol organized the vigil as members from the group called for an end to the violence.

"My heart goes out to the family, I can feel their loss. Compassion for what they're going through right now," said Pastor Larry Camel with Parishioners on Patrol.

Saginaw police are still investigating the murder. Detectives believe they know some of the key players who are involved, but it's not enough information to make an arrest.

"We have the names of some people that we're trying to follow up with to see what their involvement may actually be, if any. Like I said, we're just running down tips. But I think we're getting an idea of who is involved, it's just a matter of tying it all together," said Sgt. Brent VanderHaar.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-422-JAIL.
