House approves anti-abortion bills in Michigan

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan House has passed legislation that would restrict and regulate abortion practices though it set aside or eased some contentious provisions.

The House approved the main bill Wednesday on a 70-39 vote. The package includes requiring a doctor or assistant to screen patients to ensure they aren't being coerced into ending their pregnancies.

It also enacts new regulations related to the disposal of fetal remains, though makes penalties civil infractions rather than felonies.

The House didn't take up a companion bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Supporters say the measures are commonsense, overdue reforms. Critics say that many are confusing, contradictory and already covered by state laws.

Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville says he expects his chamber to take up the legislation in September.
