SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

School officials in Carrollton held a memorial and balloon launch Thursday morning to remember a 12-year-old boy who was killed in a drive-by shooting last week.

Tamaris Steward was shot and killed in the early hours of June 7 when someone fired 10 shots into his grandfather's home on Saginaw's east side.

Before the balloon launch students and staff gathered inside the school to reflect on Steward's life and to sign a large memorial.

"I miss my friend. I don't know why people do this," said 11-year-old Corey Green, a classmate of Steward.

On Wednesday, hundreds in the community also gathered for a prayer vigil to show support and sympathy for the family.

"My heart goes out to the family, I can feel their loss. Compassion for what they're going through right now," said Pastor Larry Camel with Parishioners on Patrol.

Saginaw police are still investigating the murder. Detectives told TV5's Liz Gelardi they believe they know some of the key players involved in the shooting, but do not have enough information to make an arrest yet.

Steward's 66-year-old grandfather suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder during the shooting. He's expected to be OK.
