Roger Clemens found not guilty of lying to Congress - WNEM TV 5

(AP) - Famed professional baseball player Roger Clemens was acquitted of lying to members of Congress about his alleged steroid use.

The jury returned a verdict of not guilty on six charges Monday, wrapping up a 10-week trial that capped an expensive, five year investigation into one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history.

"I appreciate everyone who came in... to speak on my behalf or tell a story or give their input," Clemens said at a press conference after the verdict came down.

He started tearing up as he acknowledged the support he has gotten from members of the media and fans who have followed his career.

"I put a lot of hard work into that career," he said shakily.

Clemens, 49, was accused of perjury, making false statements and obstructing Congress when he testified at a deposition and at a nationally televised hearing in February 2008.

The charges centered on his repeated denials that he used steroids and human growth hormone during his 24-year career.

The verdict is the latest blow to the government's pursuit of athlete's accused of drug use.
