SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

After nearly eight years as Police Chief, Gerald Cliff has announced his retirement from the Saginaw Police Department effective July 10.

Cliff, who took over in 2005, was instrumental in the development and use of new technology, raising Saginaw to both state and national prominence with the opening of the RAPTOR Center, and implementing innovative improvements in the department's operations during his tenure.

Chief Gerald Cliff is stepping down and is taking a job in Fairmont, WV.

He told TV5 he will be training police there how to catch white-collar criminals, a much different job compared to arresting bad guys on the streets in Saginaw.

In his letter of retirement, Cliff wrote, "After more than seven years in the position of Chief of Police of the City of Saginaw, I will be retiring from my position effective July 10, 2012, I have decided to accept a position as Research Director of the National White Collar Crime Center … It has been both an honor and a privilege to serve the citizens of this great city."

No timeline for a replacement police chief has been disclosed.
