Norovirus suspected of hitting 40 cheer camp girls

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (AP) -

Health authorities are investigating a suspected norovirus outbreak among girls attending a cheerleading camp at Davenport University in Grand Rapids.

Mlive.com and WOOD-TV say about 40 of the 425 middle and high school girls at the camp came down with symptoms consistent with norovirus -- nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. They say no one has needed hospitalization.

Kent County Health Department spokeswoman Lisa LaPlante says the disease first hit one building and then a second but didn't affect girls in a third location. She says that's a sign the illness didn't come from food service at the camp.

LaPlante says health officials talked with Davenport officials about disinfecting the buildings with a mixture of bleach and water.
