Neighbors try to cope with death of 4-year-old tribal boy

Posted: Updated:

Neighbors of four-year-old Carnel Chamberlain are trying to come to grips with the discovery of the boy's body next to their house.

Esther Chatfield is a great aunt to the boy. Chatfield says Carnel was polite, and she never had any problems with the youngster. "He was really quiet...I mean, he was a really good kid, he'd never wander off, he'd always come and see our little puppies," Chatfield told WNEM TV-5.

Esther's husband Wallace echoed her feelings about Carnel, saying "he was a pretty good little boy, took directions from his parents and stuff, and was well mannered."

Wallace Chatfield says he doesn't know how long it will take to move on following the news of the discovery of the boy's body. It was found under a porch at the house where he lived with his mother.

"Being living right here, we'll probably never get over it," said Chatfield.

Little Carnel's death is devastating to Esther Chatfield, who broke down when she told us that she knew the boy's body was located next door to her house.

"What's so bad is that I have to live here, my husband and I have to live here knowing that baby was over there. Like I told other people I knew that baby was there, I  just knew it in my own heart, because of the dogs, the way they acted, they just kept going around the house. In my heart I knew that baby was there, I just wish something could have been done quicker."
