Fireworks may have caused fire that destroyed van

HURON COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Police in Huron County say a minivan caught fire after someone recklessly shot off fireworks in Bad Axe.

The incident occurred just after 10:30 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of W. Irwin Street and Bacon Street.

When officers arrived at the at the home, located at 333 Bacon Street, they found a minivan engulfed in flames, according to a news release issued by the Bad Axe Police department.  

A neighbor at the scene told officers they heard a loud bang from what she believed was some kind of fireworks exploding. The woman went on to tell police she noticed a car sitting at the end of her neighbor's driveway and also noticed the van was on fire.

She told police the car left the scene traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed.

Police told TV5 the van was destroyed by the flames and the homeowner's garage also sustained heat and fire damage.

The incident remains under investigation as a possible reckless use of fireworks and malicious destruction of property complaint.

Police have yet to release photos of the burned-out minivan.
