BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

The 16th annual Nathan Weidner Chicken Barbecue drew quite a crowd Sunday. The event raises money to help children who are victims of abuse and neglect.

"It has become all about the kids now. The kids that we are helping and the kids that Nathan probably would've help in his life if he had been here," said Ann Weidner, Nathan's mom and co-founder of the organization that bears his name.

Proceeds from the event go the Nathan Weidner Children's Advocacy Center and local scholarships. The center is able to provide a safe place to interview children victims.

As for the barbecue's success, Weidner said it's in the chicken. The recipe is a secret and the fries are homemade. Organizers expected more anywhere from 1,200 to 1,500 people.

Nathan Weidner died during a moped accident in 1994, his parents started the foundation soon after his death.
