Prosecutors call Cash for Gold event a 'possible scam' - WNEM TV 5

Cash for Gold attendees $$$-less after possible scam

Posted: Updated:

The Bay City Michigan State Police post, in conjunction with the Bay County prosecutor, have launched a criminal investigation into an Illinois-based group that recently hosted a cash for gold event in Mid-Michigan.

The Tuesday, July 10, through Saturday, July 14, event at the Bay Valley Resort and Conference Center was hosted by THR Associates and offered to buy up scrap gold from area residents.

Since then, police said multiple attendees have called to complain to State Police that their THR Associates company checks were bouncing. Troopers directed the complainants to Prosecutor Kurt Asbury's office.

After Asbury's office and MSP troopers investigated the event further, they said they suspect the cash for scrap gold event to be a possible scam.

Authorities said they reached this conclusion due to the number of non-sufficient funds checks issued in Michigan, reports on the Internet that THR company checks were bouncing in multiple other states and the fact that all the THR company associates fled Bay Valley Resort without paying their bills.

Investigators said attempts to contact THR Associates by telephone and email have been unsuccessful.

Authorities are asking that if anyone else has trouble with checks from THR to contact MSP Trooper James Willing at the Bay City post at 989-684-2234.
