USS Edson on Lake St. Clair/John and Barbie Loman
Passing under the Ambassador Bridge/Kenneth Bailey
BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -
The 418-foot destroyer USS Edson will become the centerpiece of the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship museum very soon.
The USS Edson is expected to reach its final destination in Bay City by Tuesday morning.
"The exact time of its arrival is hard to estimate at this point. It is currently on Lake Huron after coming under the Blue Water Bridge at 5:30 a.m.," TV5's Eric Jylha reported.
Jylha posted this update regarding the ship's progress on Facebook around 1 p.m.:
Latest word on the USS Edson. New arrival time is around 9-am Tuesday. They swapped pilots in Port Huron after a slow go down Lake Erie in the wind. After entering Lake Huron this morning, conditions slowed them down again. New departure time for the Princess Wenonah is 8-am in the morning. Tickets are only available at the Antique Center on Water at Third. $30 dollars included the trip to meet the Edson and a buffet lunch. Part of the proceeds will go to the Edson project. Times are subject to change, watch for updates.
TV5 has learned from officials that the ship passed Harbor Beach around 3:15 p.m. on Monday.
When the ship arrives in the Saginaw River, it will temporarily stop at the Wirt Stone Dock. Turning the USS Edson into a museum is expected to cost $1.4 million.
The destroyer left from Philadelphia on July 18 and will journey more than 2,400 miles before it reaches its permanent location near the Independence Park Boat Launch.
Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum worked for more than 15 years to get the ship to Mid-Michigan.
