BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -
This November, Bay City residents will get to decide whether they are willing to pay a tax increase to help cover the cost of public safety.
This comes after the board of commissioners voted 5-4 in favor of the tax increase to appear on the November ballot.
City officials have been looking for ways to cut costs to public safety.
Currently, about $2 million of the city's reserve fund is spent on public safety.
Officials say they would bring in about $1.2 million with a tax increase.
About 25 residents attended Monday night's meeting.
Some say they are not optimistic about the tax increase passing.
Mayor Chris Shannon does have the ability to veto the move.
He has voiced his opposition to the tax increase being placed on the ballot.
