SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -
Saginaw County's director of animal control still has a job this Thursday after members of the county board voted to reverse some policies that she instituted, but took no action against her at last night's meeting.
Kim Shreve said she is an animal lover. She joined a number of other residents in voicing concerns regarding the Saginaw County Animal Care Center. "The shelter, obviously it's not a fun place to be, and some sad things have to happen," Shreve told TV5's Craig McMorris.
Last night a number of residents brought complaints to the county commission board meeting. A big issue was director Val McCullough's decision to allow pit bulls to be adopted. Until recently, pit bulls brought in were euthanized and not adopted out if the dog wasn't claimed by its owner in an allotted amount of time. Shreve doesn't have a problem with that change in policy.
"Being an animal [lover] and working in animal rescue I think it's a good idea to be able to adopt them out, I think you just have to be very careful about who they are going to and make sure that they are really evaluated before they are put out for adoption to make sure that they would make a good pet," said Shreve.
McCullough wasn't at last night's meeting, but the board did vote to make some changes at the facility she runs. One of them was Shreve's number one concern: to make sure volunteers can still help at the facility on weekends.
"When you have a group of volunteers who really want to be involved, especially on the weekends," said Shreve. "They weren't allowing the volunteers [in] on the weekends, [to] walk the dogs."
Shreve said she's satisfied over the moves that the commission made last night.
"It's all about the animals, is what it comes down to, what's best for them," said Shreve.
WNEM TV-5 tried to contact care center director Colleen McCullough, but she was not available for comment. Meanwhile, Saginaw County Sheriff William Federspiel said his staff is currently conducting two separate investigations into alleged crimes at the shelter and plans to submit reports to the prosecutor's office within two weeks.
