Olympic boxing champion, 17, gets Capitol welcome - WNEM TV 5

Olympic boxing gold medalist Claressa Shields remains in the spotlight Wednesday, when state legislators welcome her to the Michigan Capitol.

The 17-year-old middleweight from Flint is getting a reception at noon from members of the Genesee County delegation.

Those on hand to greet her are to include Flint Democratic state Reps. Woodrow Stanley and Jim Ananich, House Democratic Leader Richard Hammel of Mount Morris Township, and Democratic state Sen. John Gleason of Flushing.

Shields beat Nadezda Torlopova of Russia 19-12 in London on Thursday as she battered her way to the gold in the first Olympics featuring women's boxing.

She received a hero's welcome Monday when she flew back to Flint, with hundreds cheering her at Bishop International Airport and at a rally.

Shields was the only athlete from the 12-member American boxing team to win gold. The 17-year-old boxer is a junior at Flint's Northwestern High School.
