Flint Powers happy to be part of new SVL

GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Flint Powers was the "Cinderfellas" in last year's playoffs.

The Chargers got off to a 2-4 start, needed help to qualify for the post season at 5-4, and then ran the table beating Lansing Catholic in the state final 56-26 to capture the Division five crown.

"You can't buy experience you can't teach experience," said Powers coach Bob Buckel. "So when you get into a lot of close games and can win a couple you start to gain confidence.  And that confidence really built up for us as we got into the playoffs."

But that was last year.  This year a lot has changed.  Powers along with remaining Big Nine members Flushing, Davison and Carmen Ainsworth joined the Saginaw Valley League along with Flint Northwestern.

"You know we are ready for this new competition these new teams.  We are going to be able to travel to new places and see some new teams that we haven't faced before," Powers quarterback Garret Pougney said. "We know it's going to be competitive but we are ready for the new challenge."

Pougney is one of several key skilled players coming back.

"We return 17 players. Obviously we have a pretty good senior class," Buckel said. "We got guys that have played in state championship game, we got some skilled kids back -- that's a pretty good core to start with."
