SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -
It'll cost you more for a parking ticket in downtown Saginaw now that the city council passed an ordinance Monday night bumping up those fees.
Under the increases approved by the council, parking tickets go up $5 to $15. That doesn't sit well with one guy TV5 spoke with.
"I think that's outrageous, I mean, you might want to watch where you park and what, but the city is trying to get some more money out of you somehow, but, I don't like it," said the man.
Others TV5 talked with don't seem to mind the increase.
"Not really, I'm sorry, five more dollars, then park where you need to park," said one resident
"Maybe it's a good thing, you know," said another person.
"Oh, I think it's fine if it's a way for the city to make a little extra money, then that's fine," chipped in a third person.
Under the new fee schedule, handicapped parking violations will go up to $150 from the current $125, and that's just fine with some folks that we talked with.
Saginaw resident Richard Coleman uses handicapped parking, and he hopes the increased penalty for those who park in handicapped spots will cut down on those who park in areas set aside for the disabled.
"People who are handicapped, if you have to go further back, it's harder to get any parking space as it is. We need that," said Coleman.
It's hard to find anyone who would disagree with that fine increase.
"They should, handicapped people need the accessibility," said one person on the street.
Another increase you need to know about - if you're late paying your parking ticket, you'll now have to shell out and extra $5 as a result.
The parking ticket fees had not been updated since 2006.
