SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -
A 6-year-old girl is dead and her father hospitalized after being shot while in mid-Michigan visiting friends.
Now her family is crying out for justice for their daughter, Layla Jones, pleading for witnesses to come forward so police can track down her killer.
"I'm asking anybody who knows anything, anything, to please come forward," said Layla's mother, Julie Polk.
In the video above, the tearful pleading of a mother who lost her child in a senseless killing can be seen. Layla was killed on a street in Saginaw on Wednesday night. Her mother is desperate for witnesses to come forward to help find out who drove by and shot her daughter and her former husband, Shawrone Jones, who is recuperating from wounds to his leg.
"Please, please serve my baby girl some justice," said Julie Polk. "She needs your help, I need your help, my family needs your help. I need to rest her in peace knowing that the person who was so careless to take her life doesn't know that he took an angel from here."
Layla's stepdad also reached out to witnesses. "We're just praying that somebody who knows something, please come up, because tomorrow it may be your family, the next day it may be somebody else's family, don't matter what it is, please come out," said Larry Polk.
The little girl's cousin says now is not the time for witnesses to be labeled as being a snitch for coming forward. "Be a productive member of society and do what is right, because you may be trying to escape the police, you may withhold information from the police, but God is eternal and God knows everything," said Corey Pritchett.
Saginaw police say they have several unsolved homicide cases this year, and if you know anything about them or the Layla Jones case, give them a call, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-JAIL.
