Police make arrests in homicide of 6-year-old

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Police have arrested three suspects in connection to the shooting death of 6-year-old Layla Jones. Tips from citizens helped lead to the arrests.

Saginaw Police worked with other area agencies to execute six search warrants on Friday, Aug. 31. Later that day officers took three suspects into custody.

All three suspects are in jail at this time. The prosecutor's office is working to seek warrants. The men being held in connection to the homicide of 6-year-old Layla Jones and the attempted homicide of her father Shawrone Jones.

Officers arrested one suspect locally and two at an area hotel.

Detective Sergeant Brent VanderHaar said an emotional plea from Layla's mother led to many tips. Police followed up on those tips to produce some tips and get enough information to make an arrest.

"Credit should be given to the victim's family for the courage it took to stand up and ask the community for help in solving the slaying of their 6-year-old daughter," said Sergeant VanderHaar.

The Saginaw Police Department worked with Michigan State Police, ATF, BAYANET, Saginaw Township Police and the Saginaw County Prosecutor's Office.
