Michigan coach Brady Hoke says he's playing a lot of freshmen by design and out of necessity.
Tight end Devin Funchess and linebacker Joe Bolden made the most of their opportunities in the Wolverines' 31-25 win over Air Force on Saturday.
Funchess had four receptions for 106 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown.
He became the first tight end to have 100-plus yards receiving since 1997 when Jerame Tuman did it against Colorado.
Funchess replaced injured starter Brandon Moore.
Bolden made 10 tackles after fifth-year senior Kenny Demens started the game and watched much of it from the sideline.
Michigan moved up two spots to No. 17 in The Associated Press college football poll on Sunday.
The Wolverines host Massachusetts on Saturday.
