Local sign shop to begin restoration of nuclear missile

Posted: Updated:

A sign shop in Flushing is getting ready to work on something only a handful of people have ever seen: a nuclear missile.

"It's very unique for sure," said Daniel Crannie, owner of Signs by Crannie. "It's a '60s-era U.S. Polaris nuclear missile. It's from the cold war era."

The missile comes with historical significance.

"I'm told it was on a submarine during the Cuban missile crisis, somewhere in the world," Crannie said. "The information I have that was provided to us says there's only one nuclear missile in private hands in the United States and it sits in my storage lot, so that's pretty cool. "

The missile's owner runs MilitaryVehicleWeb.com, a web site that discovers interesting collectible pieces all over the world for its clients.

So the question is: how does a cold war-era ballistic missile end up at a sign shop in Flushing?

That all starts with a previous military restoration.

"We restored the cockpit and fuselage of an A-7 corsair jet from the military that now resides in a museum in Israel," Crannie said. "We've done some really cool, interesting projects with him. He does some really fun stuff, and most of it has to do with some sort of our history. There's been a lot of cool history lessons for us along the way as well."

The shop is now getting ready to begin work.

"I expect that it will be real soon. He started giving us some information as what needs to be done. There's some rust spots that need to be fixed and repair work on the nose cone and things. It's been out of circulation for a number of years, so it needs some detailing." said Crannie.
