College prep events scheduled in Bay County

Posted: Updated:
BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

With the school year just beginning, the Bay Commitment College Access Network is offering students and their families the opportunity to get a jump on college planning with four events in their "You Too Can with BCCAN" series.

Staff members will cover three different topics including The Kool Kits on Sept. 18 and Sept. 25, Awesome ACT on Oct. 11 and Fantastic FAFSA on Nov. 7.

During the Kool Kits event, attendees will receive college prep survival kits which help alleviate the stress associated with the college-going process. Additionally, staff members will direct participants in the use of the kits and provide tips for preparing for post-secondary education.

The Awesome ACT event on Oct. 11 is designed to provide students with strategies for achieving higher scores on the ACT - the widely accepted college entrance exam.  Additionally, an overview of college preparation services available at the Bay Commitment College Resource Center will be presented.

During the Fantastic FAFSA session, students will learn about the requirement for all students who apply for federal financial assistance using the "Free Application for Federal Student Aid" (FAFSA). The sometimes daunting FAFSA will be made a little less fearful for attendees at the Nov. 7 event.

All sessions are free to the public. Each begins at 6 p.m. in the Pere Marquette Depot and will last approximately one hour.

You can RSVP for any of the sessions by calling 989-893-6026 or emailing jamiew@bayfoundation.org.

If a student or family member has questions regarding any part of the college process, they are highly encouraged to contact the Bay Commitment College Resource Center, located in the Pere Marquette Depot at 1000 Adams St. in downtown Bay City.

Resource center coordinators are available to help students find and apply for scholarships, navigate the financial aid process, and provide resources based on student need.

To schedule an appointment please call Renee Courier, program officer, at 989-893-6026.
