OGEMAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -
Whitney Kropp said she was at the wrong end of a bad joke.
"It's just basically high school drama, immaturity is how I can see it," said Whitney.
Whitney, a sophomore at Ogemaw Heights High School, said she's been picked on in the past.
But she said the bullying hit a new high this year when she was voted in as the sophomore representative for this year's homecoming court. She said she felt betrayed because after she won, some of her classmates said she was selected as a joke. That betrayal was hard for her to swallow.
"I had actually reached a point where I had thought about suicide for how bad this case was in," Whitney said. "I thought I wasn't worthy at Ogemaw Heights at all."
But once news of this bad joke spread, people worked to make it right. Whitney started receiving a lot of Facebook support and people called her and told her to stay strong. Donny Winter, a graduate from Ogemaw Heights, was one of them and said he felt it was important to speak up because he was also bullied. He made a YouTube video to show his support for the 16-year-old.
"Bullying cannot be resolved by silence, it has to be resolved by actually stating what's happening and actually saying it's wrong," said Winter.
Whitney wouldn't allow herself to be beat down by bullies, and as she stood strong, the community came forward. Her homecoming dance dress was paid for. Her homecoming dance dinner was paid for. And her homecoming dance hairdo was also covered.
"This was something that was really awful, could have ended awful, and because so many people came together, it just turned right around," said Bernice Kropp, Whitney's mother.
Bernice Kropp said the overwhelming support has helped make this bad situation right. Whitney agrees and says now she's excited for the dance in a couple of weeks.
"They want to see someone like me to go to the top and see what it's like, plus they want someone with looks, like being pretty with a good personality to be a good candidate to represent them this year," said Whitney.
