Southfield, MI (WNEM) -

Sarah Hekmati, the sister of Amir Hekmati, was joined by others in the Islamic community today who are concerned about the situation involving her brother.

Amir is the Mid-Michigan resident who has been held in an Iranian prison for more than a year on a charge that he's a spy for the CIA.

"He has no contact with us," said Sarah Hekmati, Amir's sister. "We have no idea what his conditions are in the prison, we have no idea of his state."

The Council on Amerian-Islamic Relations, MI Chapter hosted the press conference hoping to get the word out to the Iranian authorities who are in the U.S. right now.

"We called this press conference today because we'd like to get maximum attention to Amir's case," said Dawud Walid, Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations MI Chapter, "prior to the President of Iran, (Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad speaking to the United Nations General Assembly."

The Iranian president is scheduled to address the General Assembly tomorrow, and the Hekmatis, as well as the Council on American-Islamic Relations, hope timing will be everything.

"We hope that the Iranian authorities that are in the U.S. can hear our plea, and that all the effort that we've put for having silent diplomacy for the past year, with hopes that we could resolve this matter with diplomatic terms, can be resolved while we have Iranian officials and the President of Iran here on American soil." Hekmati said.

We told you yesterday of Amir's father's grave medical condition and that time might not be on his side.

"My dad's biggest fear knowing now that he has this prognosis, is that the length of time that it's taken now could take longer, and that he may not have that opportunity to see his son, my brother, again." said Hekmati.
