Hunters gear up for archery season

Posted: Updated:

Monday is an unofficial holiday for outdoor enthusiasts in Michigan as it's opening day for the bow hunting season.
"I got both of my sons into hunting, so now they're really stoked about it, I waited to the last minute to get my bow worked on, I made sure theirs bows are all right, and dad puts his off to the end," said Terry Sullivan, a hunter.
Sunday, people were finishing up some last minute business at Gander Mountain in Saginaw and there was no shortage of people getting their bows tuned up and buying those last minute essentials.
"The weather, leaves are starting to turn, it's just nice out there, you know, and bow hunting, you're so close to the deer, it ain't like you're shooting 200 yards out, you're 20 yards from a pile or whatever," said Josh Bouza.
Bouza hasn't missed an opening day in 10 years. His bait pile is set up and he's scoped out his prospective target on his trail cam. This year he'll try to tag an 8-point buck.
"It's been coming in pretty regular every day, so hopefully he comes in, and I get a shot," said Bouza.
Kayla Darland will work her skills for the first time ever tomorrow. She has family that hunts, her significant other is an avid bow hunter, she has a cammo purse and she's going to give hunting a shot.

"I'm going to be very nervous when I see it," said Darland.
The hunters all say they're looking forward to this season. They do have concerns with the Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease killing off some of the herd, but think overall, there should be plenty of targets.
"All and all, it should be a good season. It was really dry out, so hopefully they had enough food for them and it'll be a good season," said Sullivan.

Many of the hunters TV5 spoke with Sunday night said they will be hunting state land. To see a complete list of state hunting areas, visit the Michigan Department of Natural Resource's Website.
